‘Pass the Mic Project’ Highlight Series

G4GC’s Pass the Mic Project is a narrative filmmaking project and documentary to amplify the voices of girls and gender-expansive youth of Color in research. Every few weeks, we highlight compelling excerpts from grantee partner interviews on our socials.

Recently, we featured Ana Puente Flores (former CUNY Beyond Identity participant and co-founder of Mazorca Colectiva), who discusses the importance of women and girls of color being in community with one another, and living with purpose or our “soul’s calling”. New Songs Rising Fellow’s ‘Deep Dive’

On January 28, our New Songs Rising Fellows, a group of Native and Globally-Indigenous young people, met for a deep analysis and conversation around the intersection and inseparability of Indigeneity and gender. Fellows heard from guest speakers Jakey Sala Siolo of Nuanua Collective and a New Songs Rising Initiative grantee. The conversation explored Indigenous concepts of gender that have existed since time immemorial, how to use person-focused and/or gender-neutral language, and understanding our individual places within the universe of gender.

Dr. Monique Couvson named TIME Magazine’s ‘The Closers’ honoree

This February, G4GC President/CEO Dr. Monique Couvson was named one of TIME Magazine’s 2025 ‘The Closers’ honorees, which featured phenomenal Black leaders working to end the racial equity gap, where Dr. Couvson amplified the importance of creating spaces for young people to lead in significant ways: “It’s about our young people being able to step into leadership in a way that honors their brilliance and wisdom in this very critical moment that impacts their lived experiences,” she says. G4GC’s Director of Organizational Health, Operations, and Learning, Kyndall Clark Osibodu, joined the 2025 Class of Women inPower, a fellowship program aimed at advancing women+ to the highest levels of leadership across all sectors.Women in Power is a unique Fellowship program for senior-level women-identifying leaders across all professional sectors who want to focus on social impact. Offered by the 92nd Street Y in New York, the fellowship provides professional development and executive mentorship. We look forward to the learnings and collaborations made possible by this opportunity.

Women Driving Change

G4GC’s Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships, Nneka Nwaifejokwu, celebrated Women’s History Month at In Her Hands: Women Driving Change, an empowering event dedicated to advancing conversations around philanthropy, gender equity, and the transformative power of the arts. Nneka was one of the panelists, along with other leaders in philanthropy, the arts, and advocacy who are driving change and advancing strategies to empower women and girls locally and globally.

Dr. Couvson Joins Leaders on Capitol Hill to Unveil Groundbreaking GAO Report on Pushout of Black Girls in Schools

“The safest schools for Black, Latina/e, and Indigenous girls and gender-expansive youth are those that operate with the belief that no child is disposable, and that demonstrate this by building an infrastructure —which includes counselors and restorative approaches— to respond to children appropriately when they experience dysregulation.” Dr. Monique Couvson was part of the unveiling of the groundbreaking GAO Report on Pushout of Black Girls in Schools.

Dr. Monique Couvson honored at SHE Leads Conference

G4GC President & CEO Monique Couvson was honored at the SHE Leads conference on October 1. SHE Leads is the first, if not only, conference for women leaders of girl-serving organizations in the U.S. Dr. Couvson partnered with Shaun Robinson and her foundation Shaun Foundation For Girls, to create an intimate conference for networking, strategizing, and investing in women’s leadership for girls.

Centering Black women and girls’ wellness on Martha’s Vineyard

G4GC was thrilled to partner with Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, Berklee Professor and graduate, Ledisi, and Emmy-award-winning journalist, author, and activist Shaun Robinson for our August 12 fundraising event on Martha’s Vineyard!
The Black Girl Freedom Fund partnered with Vibrant Emotional Health to host a conversation about the importance of investing in the mental health and well-being of Black women and girls. The gathering celebrated the power, wisdom, and leadership of Black women, girls, and gender-expansive youth, and featured G4GC President & CEO, Dr. Monique Couvson and other special guests. Supporting power-building & racial justice

The California Black Freedom Fund and G4GC’s Black Girl Freedom Fund have partnered with the family of Chinedu Valentine Okobi to administer a sabbatical program in his name that supports healing, rest, and joy for leaders of Black power-building and racial justice organizations. Hispanics In Philanthropy Líderes Fellowship Retreat

Lisann Ramos, G4GC Communications Manager, connected with a cohort of Latine leaders in philanthropic and nonprofit organizations this summer in Colorado Springs to open the HIP leadership fellowship. The group tapped into their leadership skills and explored their relationship to philanthropy, as individuals and within the Latine community, while building up a network of phenomenal Latino leaders in Philanthropy. Insights of Girls and Gender-Expansive Youth of Color

On October 2, Alliance for Girls* (AFG) and Girls Inc. of Alameda County co-hosted the virtual event, State of the Bay Area Girl Initiative Plática. This powerful, storytelling-based opportunity uncovered the true “state” of girls and gender-expansive youth as they define it—what matters to them, the systems that shape their lives, and the solutions they envision for their future. ‘At A Crisis Point’: Black women leading nonprofits are leaving, a new group is seeking solutions

Honoring Women Leaders in a Fun Way

Nurturing Wāhine Fund, a feminist fund in Hawaiʻi providing Wellness Grants to women and girls across the islands, has created an online solitaire game to honor women who’ve been instrumental in their efforts to spotlight critical issues like childcare, maternal health, and wāhine wellness during this generation-defining election year. Sister to Sister International Celebrates 30 Years

We’re excited to join Sister to Sister International in celebrating its 30th anniversary. G4GC’s very own Maheen Kaleem was honored at their gala in New Rochelle, NY. In her speech, Maheen celebrated the invaluable impact of the organization, “Sister to Sister is so important because everywhere around the world, Black and Brown women and girls are going to know that we have value. We are going to be reminded of our power when the world extracts it and forgets it, and this community will have you.”

Community Healing Days

Every 4th Tuesday of the month BreakBox Thought Collective hosts a community healing space to process resilience and address barriers to wellbeing. Join an intergenerational healing circle, expressive arts therapy group, or men’s healing circle and express your emotions with culturally competent, licensed therapists. BreakBox Thought Collective’s goal is to encourage our community to experience these modalities and resources at no cost and connect participants to mental health and support resources. New Songs Rising Fellowship Retreat

Our New Songs Rising Fellows, a group of ten Native and Indigenous young people from across the U.S., met in person for the first time this past month in the Pueblo of Isleta where they embarked on our New Songs Rising Initiative’s first participatory grantmaking process. The fellows also worked together to strategize on the future of the Initiative and connect with one another and the local community. We’re thrilled to share more about their participatory grantmaking process in the months to come! 

G4GC’s Pass the Mic Project update

Exciting news! Our long-awaited Pass the Mic Project documentary film will be released online via the G4GC website and Vimeo this summer. The documentary shares compelling research and interviews with girls and gender-expansive youth of Color from five G4GC grantee partners based in NYC, D.C., and beyond. We’re deeply grateful to our participating grantee partner and youth, (discover more about the project and the organizations here), and all that we’ve learned together through the creation process.

Josefina joins Ethical Storytelling series

How can one teach their team to use ethical storytelling when interacting with the people they serve? G4GC’s Senior Director of Communications Josefina Casati shared her insights at MemoryFox’s “Narratives With Integrity” series on June 11th. Presenting research in New Orleans!

In June G4GC staff attended Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy’s conference in New Orleans, where Dr. Whitney Richards-Calathes (G4GC Senior Director of Research, Advocacy and Policy) and Vanessa Patiño-Lydia (G4GC Research Consultant) presented and uplifted ethical and intersectional research methodologies in their workshop titled “RealSearch: Gathering Ethical + Intersectional Data in Philanthropy.”

SisterMentors: Grantee Partner Update

This March, G4GC grantee partner SisterMentors returned to annual multi-day and overnight college visits during spring break, with visits to Bryn Mawr College and Haverford College right outside of Philadelphia, PA. At Bryn Mawr College visit, sixteen middle school-aged girls and young women had the chance to meet with BIPOC students, join a session on support for low-income and first-generation students, learn the value of attending a liberal arts and women’s college, and much more. “It was such a unique and wonderful experience it went way above my expectations,” said one of the young people.

A New Era of Justice Annual Conference

Black Women for Wellness is hosting its 25th Reproductive Justice Conference, “A New Era of Justice: Our Bodies, Our Voices, Our Freedom,” on August 15, 2024 in Los Angeles. The conference is a celebration and a gathering to discuss key issues impacting the wellness of Black girls and women. For more details, visit their website here.

Affirmations for Indigenous youth

The Native Youth Sexual Health Network (NYSHN) is led by Indigenous youth working across issues of sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice! The Indigenous Youth Affirmation Deck was designed by and for Indigenous youth to celebrate, support, affirm, and encourage self-reflection and peer support. 

The power of nonprofit networking

Maheen Kaleem, G4GC VP of Operations and Programs, joined the 2024 Nonprofit Resource Hub Conference as a speaker on ‘The Power of Networking’ panel. She and other panelists discussed maximizing nonprofit networking for collaboration, partnerships, and influencer relationships. Check out her panel here.

Celebrating Trans Day of Visibility

On March 29th G4GC held an Instagram live event to honor this day of awareness. nahr suha, G4GC’s ​​Holding a Sister Initiative (HASI) Fund Manager was in conversation with Jack Knoxville (Executive Director, Trans Empowerment Project) and June Pearson (Rising Scholar, at Western Michigan University). Attendees celebrated the joy and resilience of trans, non-binary, gender nonconforming and gender-expansive communities of Color and shared many insightful experiences, as well as some of their favorite video games. Cultivation event at SXSW

On March 12th, G4GC co-hosted a cultivation dinner with Donors of Color Network at SXSW in Austin, Texas, to share ideas and strategies for revolutionizing support for girls and gender-expansive youth of Color. Attendees included philanthropists and advocates who discussed how youth are driving change in culture, communities, economies, and our world.

G4GC attended the inspiring HARNESS Mainstage, an event we proudly co-sponsored! It was a gathering of artists, creatives, and activists who discussed how we can collectively work to achieve justice. It was thrilling to see our grantees like Protect the Sacred and National Women’s Law Center featured!

G4GC co-hosts feminist solidarity at UN CSW 

On March 12 at the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women G4GC proudly co-hosted a resistance-focused event that centered on the experiences, wisdom, and power of girls and women responding to crises in our world. G4GC Sr. Director of Research, Advocacy, and Policy Dr. Whitney Richards-Calathes supported the facilitation of a story circle curated by ADI Magazine and Our Collective Practice.

New report: Black youth feel unsafe in schools

During one of the BGFW panels, we learned about Interrupting Criminalization and In Our Names Network’s new report about police presence in schools. The report shares insights from a 3-year community storytelling project engaging Black girls, trans and gender nonconforming youth in Columbia, South Carolina, New York City, and the Bay Area around their experiences of police presence in schools, including sexual harassment, assault, and violence by police stationed in and around schools. “If I didn’t have my violin from school, I don’t know what I would do,” 12-year-old Porchè Brinker said as she opened the Oscar-winning documentary, The Last Repair Shop. The film follows an instrument repair shop in L.A. and the young people of Color who are changed by tapping into their musical gifts with free instruments at school. Porchè lit up the Oscars stage as the film’s directors accepted their award. “Music education isn’t just about creating incredible musicians, it is about creating incredible humans,” said co-director Kris Bowers. The Last Repair Shop is streaming on Disney+

Affirmations for Indigenous youth

The Native Youth Sexual Health Network (NYSHN) is led by Indigenous youth working across issues of sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice! The Indigenous Youth Affirmation Deck was designed by and for Indigenous youth to celebrate, support, affirm, and encourage self-reflection and peer support.

2023 New Songs Rising Fellows

We’re honored to have these 10 incredible Indigenous girls and gender-expansive young people supporting the New Songs Rising Initiative. The fellows will meet virtually, across an 18 month period, to build community and sense of self, celebrate Indigenous identity and belonging, expand their leadership skills, support a participatory grantmaking model, and influence the visioning of NSRI. Transformations Liberation Camp

This year our Holding a Sister Initiative (HASI) hosted Liberation Camp, a leadership development retreat for Trans communities of color in the Ozarks, Arkansas, in collaboration with Transformations (@kctransformations).

Led by G4GC’s Nahr Suha and Transformations’ Merrique Jenson, the camp hosted a brilliant group of emerging trans leaders— including six young people in HASI’s first cohort. Celebrating Indigenous Joy

G4GC’s New Songs Rising Initiative (NSRI) hosted a Celebration of Indigenous Joy in July with panels and videos from Indigenous girls, femmes and gender-expansive youth, as well as representatives from NSRI grantee partner organizations who support the brilliance and leadership of Indigenous youth.

We presented a conversation with our NSRI partners, Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples, a panel with grantee partners on Centering Indigenous Representation in Data as well as a conversation with Indigenous youth. We also debuted a video by NSRI grantee partner Allie Redhorse Young of Protect The Sacred with appearances and testimonials from New Songs Rising Initiative grantee partner organizations and Native and Globally-Indigenous young people. Black Girl Freedom Fund 2023 Grantees

We’re thrilled to announce our 2023 Black Girl Freedom (BGFF) grantee partners, and highlight their incredible work!

For this year’s BGFF grantmaking cycle, the Black Girl Freedom Fund Youth Grantmaking Council selected 18 youth-led projects, as well as 17 nonprofit organizations that center Black girls, femmes, and gender-expansive youth.

The BGFF Youth Projects focused on the artistic vision, activism, and innovation of Black girls, femmes, and gender-expansive youth ages 15-25, and were granted $10,000 grants each. The 17 organizations that join BGFF as grantee partners facilitate programming that focuses on the artistic vision, activism, and innovation of Black girls, femmes, and gender-expansive youth, ages 12-25. Ethical Storytelling: A guide to better conversations

Ensuring that narratives are accurately attributed and ethically shared is essential and just, and we’re excited to be contributors to “The Guide To Better Conversations About Ethical Storytelling.” For the last year Josefina Casati, G4GC Senior Director of Communications, has been collaborating with the team creating this communications guide, where she co-authored Chapter 4 “How should we measure success?.” Additionally, G4GC’s Raquel Thomas shared her insights and experiences in this video. Over 100 contributors collaborated in hopes of changing the way we gather and share narratives, centering and honoring those in our communities whose stories we want to share. This guide was created for communicators who care deeply about ethical storytelling in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors and has something for those who want to work toward having #BetterConversations. Our Research and Data Departments are spearing the launch of G4GC’s grantee partner survey, with the support of the brilliant research consultant Dr. Vanessa Patiño Lydia.

 Grantees are invited to share more information about the incredible work they are doing. This survey will help us build a living archive of the diverse and impactful movements centering girls and gender-expansive youth of Color. We hope that the information we get from this survey will be inspiring, transformational, and further allow you to see how you are helping the larger movement for girls, femmes, and gender-expansive youth of Color. Monique and Maheen presented alongside organizational and philanthropic partners about the need for feminist movements to ensure that girls and gender-expansive youth are centered in our efforts to achieve justice and to end gendered violence.

We’re still buzzing with the energy and joy that we collectively experienced at our two events hosted at Martha’s Vineyard in celebration of our Black Girl Freedom Fund and the #1Billion4BlackGirls campaign:

In September, the G4GC Executive Leadership team went to DC to meet with the Department of Justice, Office of Violence Against Women and the White House Gender Policy Council. We were grateful to strategize together about how to advance public and private investment in girls gender-expansive youth of Color.

Tran and Latosha at ComNet23 in Atlanta

In September, our Digital Communications Strategist, Tran Tonnu, attended ComNet23. One of Tran’s highlights was hearing LaTosha Brown’s keynote (co-founder of #1Billion4BlackGirls campaign), where she reminded attendees of the value of organizing community through relationships and deep listening as the path to deliver change.

Prudential Emerging Visionaries, a collaboration between Prudential and Ashoka, is looking for young changemakers between the ages of 14 and 18 in the US and Puerto Rico who are taking steps to tackle financial and societal challenges and have bold visions for a better future. Join a Proposal Writing Boot Camp

Sharpen your proposal writing skills in preparation for a big 2024 fundraising year. The Stories of Girls’ Resistance

The Stories of Girls’ Resistance book documents the everyday ways in which girls are making the world better in their homes and communities, and the expansive ways girls are contributing to the world’s most powerful movements for change. The book was created by our partners at Our Collective Practice.

It weaves together the 150 stories in the collection to deepen our understanding of why girls resist, what sparks and sustains their resistance, the strategies and tactics they bring to their resistance, and the expansive ways girls are contributing to the world’s most powerful movements for change.

New Songs Rising Fellowship

Grantmakers for Girls of Color is excited to announce our New Songs Rising Fellowship! 

This 18-month fellowship for Native American and Globally-Indigenous girls*, femmes, and gender-expansive youth ages 12-24 will focus on skill-building, community building, deepening fellows’ feelings of identity and self, participatory grantmaking, and mentorship.

Pass the Mic Project Update

G4GC’s Pass the Mic Project (PTMP) is currently in its post-production editing phase! This summer, we’ll be excited to share dates for an official documentary film release, how you can watch, and how to share and amplify this powerful, narrative-shifting project. 

About the project: PTMP is a creative filmmaking project to amplify compelling participatory research and stories by girls, femmes, and youth of Color from around the U.S. To date, G4GC has hosted nine filmmaking workshops, interviewed and filmed across five major cities, with participation from six grantee partners. 7th Generation Fund visit G4GC in NYC!

It’s always memorable to be in community with our New Songs Rising Initiative (NSRI) partners, Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples. Last month we joined Seventh Gen Fund at the premiere of their documentary, “Time Of Prophecy: Walking in the Prayers of Our Ancestors,” an impactful story on the causes and effects of climate change told by Indigenous leaders. We got the chance to bond with our G4GC board member, and Seventh Generation Fund CEO, Tia Oros Peters (Shiwi), and Seventh Generation Fund Board Chairperson, Dr. Henrietta Mann (Tsetsehestaestse), who was recently honored by President Joe Biden with the National Humanities Medal for her decades-long work in academia and activism. Coming this July: kahani magazine ‘Freedom’ issue!

G4GC partnered with youth-led magazine kahani magazine on a special edition for July 2023 focused on the experiences of girls, femmes, and gender-expansive youth of Color in the U.S. and territories. The theme for the July issue is “Our Freedom,” and youth from our community of grantee partners contributed creative writing and art centered around this theme. In July, you’ll be able to check it out here!

Charisma’s Turn, a graphic novel by our very own G4GC President and CEO, Dr. Monique Couvson was released this May! G4GC successfully distributed more than 3,000 books to girls, femmes, and gender-expansive youth of Color, shared the book at a Brooklyn Children’s Theatre event (see below ), and we have other exciting events in the works. Application Open for Thriving Futures Program

Muslims for Just Futures ‘Thriving Futures: A Guaranteed Income Pilot Program’ application is now open! Thriving Futures is the first guaranteed income program focused on Muslim women and will provide a $500 monthly cash assistance, alongside workforce development, career services support, financial literacy, and community organizing training. This program will support 5 working-class DMV-based Muslim women who are heads of households for 18 months. Learn and apply here.

• William T. Grant Foundation: ‘Youth Service Capacity-Building’ grants that provide $60,000 over three years for small nonprofits that serve youth ages 5-25. Apply here.

Our Past & Future Freedom Fighters: The Power of Black Trans Leadership, Joy and Dreaming
